Philanthropy is a two-pronged activity. On one hand there is the giving you do throughout your lifetime, on the other, the legacy you want to leave. This not only includes the nature and scope of your giving after death, but whether and how to involve the next generation.
We work with clients to coordinate their lifetime and legacy giving so that there is continuity of purpose and donor intent is clearly defined and adhered to. For many clients we serve as their designated charitable distribution advisor to protect their philanthropic interests when they no longer can, much as an attorney will protect the legal rights and obligations of his or her client’s family.
Legacy Planning can include:
- Assessing legacy intentions
- Creating allocation strategies
- Adapting strategies for different vehicles
- Setting up governance policies
- Exploring options for communicating gifts
- Planning for succession
- Training future trustees
- Determining next generation involvement
- Conducting initial due diligence and periodic reviews of named charitable recipients
- Executing legacy gifts
- Developing a plan for distribution
- Serving as charitable distribution advisor
